Shocking video footage captures the intense moment when a man launched a fierce machete attack on a police officer. Roads Policing Constable Will Hunter was conducting a routine stop at a petrol station in Leam Lane, Gateshead when the situation escalated into violence.

During the stop on August 10, 2024, Matthew Bello, the offender, reacted aggressively when questioned about his insurance, wielding a machete to attack PC Hunter. The officer sustained an arm injury as Bello fled the scene, crashing into the police vehicle before fleeing.

Bello was apprehended in the nearby Saltwell area after PC Hunter called for backup. Initially charged with attempted murder, Bello later admitted to wounding with intent at Newcastle Crown Court. He was sentenced to four years in prison for the offense, along with charges of possessing a knife in public, dangerous driving, and driving without insurance.

In addition to his prison term, Bello received a two-year driving ban following his release. PC Hunter, despite the harrowing incident, returned to duty and was honored with the Bravery and Lifesaver Award at the Northumbria Police Pride in Policing Awards.

Reflecting on the traumatic event, PC Hunter recounted, “I’ve faced violent situations in my 18 years of service, but nothing prepared me for that day. I fought for my life, and I’m grateful for the support of my fellow officers in detaining the offender.”

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Wykes commended PC Hunter’s bravery, emphasizing the unwavering commitment of police officers to protect the community. He condemned violence against law enforcement and expressed satisfaction that justice was served in this case.
