Must read

Shoe repair chain Timpson has introduced a new service where customers can trade in their old mobile phones for cash at over 1,300 Timpson stores across the UK. Partnering with gadget resell firm musicMagpie and AO, Timpson aims to cater to individuals who prefer face-to-face transactions for their unwanted smartphones.

A recent survey revealed that 73% of adults in the UK possess at least one unused smartphone at home, with an average trade-in value of approximately £250 per device. The total value of unused smartphones in households is estimated to be around £10 billion, according to research conducted by Censuswide.

Despite the availability of online resale options, Timpson believes there is a demand for in-person trade-ins, with 68% of people expressing a preference for this method. Moreover, a significant portion of individuals (25%) consider immediate payment as a crucial factor when trading in their devices.

John Roberts, the CEO and founder of AO World, emphasized the convenience of the new service, stating that customers can swiftly receive cash for their old smartphones at any of the participating Timpson sites. This initiative, stemming from the collaboration between musicMagpie and Timpson, showcases the potential for unlocking value in old tech while enhancing affordability for consumers.

Steve Oliver, the managing director of musicMagpie, highlighted the significance of the partnership with Timpson in expanding their customer reach and convenience, marking a significant milestone for both companies. On the other hand, Sid Hubbard, the group director of Timpson, expressed enthusiasm about extending their service offerings to include smartphone trade-ins, aligning with their longstanding commitment to repairing and refurbishing goods.

By leveraging musicMagpie’s refurbishment expertise and Timpson’s extensive network, the collaboration aims to provide customers with instant value for their old tech, contributing to sustainability efforts and making technology more accessible to all consumers.
