Record-breaking rainfall in Japan led to severe disruptions in Tokyo on Friday as thousands of travelers found themselves stranded at Narita airport. The excessive rain, amounting to over 360 millimeters within 24 hours in parts of Chiba prefecture, caused widespread flooding, impacting transportation systems and leaving 20,000 homes without power. Tragically, the torrential downpour claimed the lives of eight individuals, including one individual who was trapped in a submerged vehicle.
Chiba Governor Toshihito Kumagai described the situation as highly unusual, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the disaster. At the airport, where around 7,000 people were left stranded due to transport disruptions, staff worked to provide essentials like sleeping bags, water, and snacks to the affected passengers. Many travelers, like Minoru Yamasaki, faced significant challenges in finding accommodations, with some forced to spend the night at the airport.
While power outages affected over 20,000 households and gas supply was temporarily disrupted for nearly 13,000 residents, efforts were made to restore services swiftly. In Chiba city, hundreds sought refuge in government buildings turned into makeshift evacuation centers, highlighting the scale of the emergency response. Road closures and suspended rail services added to the chaos, with some highways congested as drivers sought alternative routes.
Despite the challenging conditions, airport officials expected most flights to resume normal operations on Friday. The meteorological data revealed that the rainfall in Chiba surpassed previous records, underscoring the severity of the situation.
