U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, strongly denounced the actions of Israeli settlers who besieged a Palestinian American family’s home in the occupied West Bank, labeling it as a “horrific act of terror.” Reports from local authorities and family members indicate that settlers have been gathering near the residence in Qusra village since Sunday, engaging in harassment and preventing the occupants from leaving despite attempts by the Israeli military to intervene.
The group of settlers, consisting of numerous individuals, has engaged in activities such as throwing stones, attempting to breach a nearby stone wall, and limiting access to essential supplies. Qusai Abu Rida, who sought refuge in the house with his teenage son to protect it, stated that they were relocated by the Israeli military to another residence but remain restricted from leaving the area.
Speaking from Ohio, the homeowner, Loui Ridi, mentioned that the settlers had been targeting his property in Qusra for several months before tensions escalated recently. Huckabee emphasized that Israeli authorities have been urged to remove the individuals responsible for the “horrific act of terror” and expressed disgust at the intimidation and harassment faced by the family.
In response to the situation, Qusra Mayor Abed Al Athem Wadi reported that six homes in the village had been evacuated and seized by Israeli forces, including three homes under siege on hilltops. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned the actions aimed at compelling residents to abandon their homes and land. Additionally, the Canadian government, among others, reiterated their stance on the illegality of West Bank settlements under international law.
Israeli troops have taken steps to restore order, including dismantling illegal outposts and detaining individuals involved in the unrest. The military has declared the area a closed military zone, but settlers have persisted in their actions, obstructing roads and causing further tensions. The ongoing escalation of settler violence has drawn criticism from human rights organizations, foreign governments, and local communities, accusing the government of indifference towards such attacks.
