Emma Raducanu indicated that the high humidity might have been the cause of her needing medical attention during the second set of her 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 loss to Jessica Pegula in the Miami Open quarter-finals after experiencing dizziness.
Despite her defeat, the British No.2 has had a successful run in Miami, showcasing top-notch tennis similar to her performance at the US Open in 2021. Pegula, ranked No.4 globally, emerged victorious in a closely contested match against Raducanu.
During the late stages of the second set, concerns arose for Raducanu as she felt unwell and had her vital signs checked. The 22-year-old received medical attention, including having her blood pressure measured and being provided with ice towels to cool down on the court by a doctor. Raducanu displayed resilience by winning a tie-break to force a deciding set.
Although Raducanu fell short in the final set, the primary relief was her ability to continue playing and leave the court seemingly in good health post-match.
In a post-match interview, Raducanu explained that the humid conditions made her feel lightheaded. She described feeling dizzy and faint due to the humidity, long wait times, physical exertion, and extended rallies during the match, especially in the second set.
Pegula is set to face 19-year-old wildcard Alexandra Eala in the semi-finals after Eala surprised world No.2 Iga Swiatek with a 6-2 7-5 victory in their quarter-final match.
Praising Raducanu’s performance, Pegula acknowledged the tough match, highlighting her opponent’s strong ball movement and serving capabilities. Pegula expressed her strategy of starting the third set aggressively to secure victory decisively.
