A specialist in rare coins has advised the public to keep an eye out for a specific 50p coin that may hold a higher value than its face worth due to a minting error.
A video shared by UKCoinHunt on TikTok demonstrates how to identify the error found on several commemorative Sir Isaac Newton 50p coins minted and released in 2017. The coin’s reverse design is inspired by Proposition 11 in Book One of Newton’s Principia Mathematica.
The Sir Isaac Newton 50p coin is already rare, with only the Kew Gardens 50p being produced in fewer quantities. UKCoinHunt highlighted the error on the Newton coin, emphasizing its potential value beyond 50p.
By comparing a flawed coin to a standard one, UKCoinHunt showcased a “die clash error” visible as scratches near Queen Elizabeth II’s bust. The distinct feature, appearing as two parallel lines to the left of the monarch’s neck, can be challenging to capture on camera.
The TikTok user estimated the coin’s value at around £10, suggesting that multiple coins from a bulk order might exhibit the die clash issue.
Some TikTok users expressed owning the erroneous coins, while others struggled to spot the differences. One user mentioned having to inspect their coins for the error.
Upon its release eight years ago, the Royal Mint shared the historical significance of the coin, detailing Sir Isaac Newton’s contributions to improving coin quality and standards during his time as Master of the Mint.
The coin, marking the 375th anniversary of Newton’s birth, is struck to Brilliant Uncirculated standard, reflecting Newton’s dedication to precision and quality in coin production.
