John Fashanu, a former footballer and TV personality, is currently under police bail after being arrested in Nigeria following a land dispute. The 62-year-old is facing allegations of criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation, trespass, and obtaining property by false pretense. Despite these accusations, Fashanu refutes the claims and is taking legal action against the police, seeking £100,000 in compensation.
The incident revolves around a civil dispute concerning a 22-acre land deal where investors purportedly agreed to pay Fashanu over £500,000. Upon learning that workmen were constructing a perimeter fence on the site, Fashanu and his lawyer intervened. Subsequently, they were both arrested after agreeing to resolve the matter at a police station. Fashanu claims he and his companions were subjected to wrongful arrest, detention, and mistreatment by the police, alleging violations of their rights.
Fashanu, known for his football career and TV appearances, including co-hosting Gladiators and participating in reality shows like I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!, played a significant role in British football history. His brother, Justin, was Britain’s first openly gay footballer and also the first Black player to command a £1 million transfer fee.
Born in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, Fashanu holds dual British and Nigerian citizenship and has resided in Abuja for several years. He has been actively involved in football development in Nigeria and has previously served as a sports and tourism ambassador. Fashanu’s legal ordeal has disrupted his aspirations to become the national football coach of Nigeria, a position he was reportedly in contention for before his arrest.
Recently, Fashanu appeared in Abuja’s Federal High Court, where the judge postponed the proceedings to April 10 to allow all parties ample time to submit their responses. His lawyer, Chinyere Chigbu, confirmed that Fashanu, his wife Vivian, and himself are out on bail after meeting the necessary conditions set by the police.
Fashanu, using the title of Ambassador awarded to him by the Nigerian government, has filed a lawsuit against various parties, including the Nigeria Police Force and high-ranking police officials in Abuja. The case highlights the alleged violations of his rights and the traumatic impact of the arrest on his life and career. The Nigerian Police Force is yet to comment on the matter.
