Lee Westwood has expressed skepticism about Donald Trump’s ability to facilitate a merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Westwood, who switched to the Saudi-backed LIV circuit in 2022, questioned Trump’s assertion from November that he could resolve the ongoing dispute in just 15 minutes.
Despite a gathering at the White House in February involving PGA officials, PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and Trump, no breakthrough was reached after a four-hour discussion. While PGA commissioner Jay Monahan and golf icon Tiger Woods remained hopeful, former top-ranked player Westwood has voiced doubts about Trump’s influence.
Westwood stated, “He’s an avid golfer, but I doubt he holds that level of sway. What power does he really have? He cannot compel the PGA Tour to strike a deal. I don’t believe the PGA Tour is keen on reaching an agreement. Both sides would need to compromise, but it seems unlikely.”
These sentiments contrast starkly with those of PGA figure Rory McIlroy, who initially backed Trump’s idea of merging the two competitive golf sectors post his election victory.
When asked about the merger potential, McIlroy told Sky Sports, “Perhaps he can! With Elon Musk, who I consider the brightest mind globally, by his side, they might achieve something if Musk gets involved too. Trump’s strong ties with Saudi Arabia and passion for golf could play a role.”
McIlroy later grew more optimistic, stating, “The president has significant influence. He can directly reach Yasir’s superior, a privilege few have. When he speaks, it holds weight. He can push things forward.”
However, McIlroy’s optimism appeared to diminish after the White House meeting. He suggested to ESPN that despite efforts, unity in the sport remained elusive under Trump’s leadership.
“It never felt close, and it still doesn’t. It takes both parties to engage, and if one is willing while the other isn’t, progress is challenging,” McIlroy acknowledged.
