Sally Gunnell OBE has shared the story of a sudden and tragic loss of her friend due to a surprise heart attack. Despite leading an active lifestyle with minimal alcohol consumption, the 61-year-old physiotherapist succumbed to a massive heart attack caused by a small piece of plaque blocking his arteries, leading to instant death.
In an interview with the Mirror, Sally expressed the shock of her friend’s sudden passing, highlighting his dedication to fitness and health over the years. The incident served as a stark reminder of the global prevalence of heart attacks as the leading cause of death, affecting both men and women, according to the British Heart Foundation.
Following the loss of their friend, Sally and her husband, John, opted for a comprehensive health assessment with Bluecrest Wellness. The results revealed that despite some concerns about high iron levels, Sally’s metabolic age was notably younger than her actual age. However, John’s assessment showed high cholesterol levels and early signs of artery plaque, prompting necessary lifestyle adjustments.
Taking proactive steps, Sally reduced her red meat intake to address elevated iron levels, while John started taking statins to manage cholesterol. They also modified their exercise routine to stay within a less strenuous “Zone Two.” Both are scheduled for a follow-up health check to monitor their progress.
Emphasizing the importance of early intervention and awareness, Sally stressed the significance of understanding one’s health metrics and risks to prevent potential complications. At 58, she underscored the lessons learned from public figures like Davina McCall and Sir Chris Hoy, advocating for proactive health management without fear.
As individuals continue to face health challenges, Sally’s experience serves as a poignant reminder of the value of proactive health measures and regular check-ups to mitigate risks and ensure well-being.
