Thousands of demonstrators are taking to the streets of Istanbul, Turkey, engaging in clashes with law enforcement following the arrest of over 100 individuals, including the city’s mayor.
Despite a ban on large gatherings in the country, a significant number of people are defying the restrictions to voice their opinions. Riot police are confronting the protestors, utilizing tear gas and rubber bullets without discrimination. The unrest erupted on Sunday when Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul and a prominent political rival to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was incarcerated on corruption allegations. Subsequently, other officials, journalists, and business figures were also apprehended as part of an inquiry.
Imamoglu faces serious charges, including the establishment and management of a criminal organization, accepting bribes, extortion, illegal data recording, and bid rigging. While the request to detain him on terrorism charges was denied, he remains in custody awaiting trial.
Following Imamoglu’s arrest, the Interior Ministry announced his suspension from office as a temporary measure. An interim mayor was appointed by the municipality’s governing council. Meanwhile, Imamoglu, who had garnered substantial support from the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), was taken to Silivri prison as his political followers endorsed him as the CHP’s presidential nominee.
Imamoglu’s victory in the mayoral elections of Istanbul in 2019 dealt a significant blow to Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party, which had dominated the city for 25 years. Despite challenges to the election results and a subsequent re-vote, Imamoglu retained his position, marking a notable success for the CHP against Erdogan’s ruling party.
The protests in Istanbul, now entering their fifth day, have spread to other regions of Turkey, resulting in over 1,100 arrests. The government has criticized the demonstrators for allegedly misusing their right to protest, cautioning against disruptive behaviors that threaten public order.
Law enforcement officials have been facing off with a large number of protestors brandishing Turkish flags and chanting slogans in front of them. The officers, equipped in riot gear, have resorted to using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds.
