The study indicates that UK parents foresee an average weekly expenditure of £167 on childcare and activities over the six-week vacation, totaling £1,002 per child. In London, expenses are higher, reaching £236 per week or £1,416 for the entire summer.
An overwhelming 87% of parents view the summer holidays as a financial burden, prompting many to seek cost-cutting measures. Some strategies include opting for free activities like National Trust outings (33%), adhering to a summer budget (24%), seeking assistance from grandparents and extended family (18%), utilizing savings (10%), or using tax-free childcare vouchers (9%).
Over half of parents with children under 18 (53%) find planning summer childcare stressful, particularly among those with children aged 1 to 4 (63%). Kevin Brown, the savings specialist at Scottish Friendly, expressed concern over the financial strain the summer holidays bring to families. He commended parents for proactive budgeting and cost-saving approaches but cautioned against dipping into savings, highlighting the potential negative impact on long-term financial growth.
