“Aldi Named Most Budget-Friendly UK Supermarket”

Must read

A recent study by Which? has named Aldi as the most budget-friendly supermarket in the UK. The analysis compared the prices of 79 items across eight major supermarkets, with Aldi averaging a total bill of £131.52 for the month of June.

Lidl came in a close second, with an average spend of £131.87 when using the Lidl Plus app, just 35p more expensive than Aldi, or £131.89 without Lidl Plus. The selection of items included both branded and own-brand products such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For a larger shopping list of 196 items, Asda maintained its position as the most economical supermarket, averaging £484.60 in June. Tesco followed closely behind with an average bill of £492.86 for Clubcard holders. Without a Clubcard, the same items cost an average of £528.45. Waitrose emerged as the priciest option for both small and large shopping lists, totaling £178.64 and £554.68, respectively.

Aldi and Lidl were not part of the larger comparison due to product differences compared to other supermarkets. The analysis factored in special offer and loyalty prices but excluded multi-buy deals.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented on the findings, stating, “Aldi has once again secured its position as the UK’s most affordable supermarket, closely followed by Lidl. Asda’s competitive pricing for a larger grocery list outperformed Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons.”

In a time when food costs are impacting budgets, choosing one supermarket over another could lead to significant savings, with potential savings of up to £70 on a substantial shopping trip.
