A recent scheme aimed at WhatsApp users presents a threat of hackers accessing sensitive information. In the digital age, we are frequently warned about emerging online scams and the need to safeguard personal data by avoiding suspicious links and downloads.
However, scammers are becoming more sophisticated, making it challenging to distinguish fake messages or emails. One such scam, known as the “ghost pairing scam,” is currently impacting WhatsApp users, urging caution when receiving messages on the platform.
A social media user named Caroline highlighted this scam in a TikTok video, warning that falling for this trick could grant hackers remote access to your data. The scam involves receiving a seemingly legitimate message that prompts you to secure your account or forward a code, linking your account to the scammer’s device.
Granting a stranger access to your WhatsApp account allows them to view messages, photos, and even send messages on your behalf without your knowledge. The scam operates discreetly, allowing the account to function normally on your device, concealing any compromise.
To protect against such scams, never share WhatsApp codes with anyone. WhatsApp will not request codes via text messages, so if someone asks for a code, advise them to resend it to their own number. Additionally, regularly check for linked devices in your settings to disconnect any unrecognized devices.
