Must read

Aldi has been recognized as the most affordable supermarket in 2025 according to consumer advocates at Which?. Which? monitors grocery prices daily and unveils the most budget-friendly stores monthly. Aldi secured the top spot as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for the fifth consecutive year by being the most economical in ten out of 12 months in 2025.

In December, for a selection of 68 items, Aldi was the least expensive supermarket with an average cost of £123.60. Lidl followed closely in second place, with an average cost of £123.70 for both Lidl Plus members and non-members, just 10p more than Aldi.

Throughout the year, Lidl was the cheapest supermarket in July and October twice, with only a 77p monthly average price difference compared to Aldi. As for the same 68 items at Asda, the average cost was £134.89 in December, while Tesco Clubcard members paid £135.84, or £139.12 without a Clubcard.

Sainsbury’s Nectar card holders spent £141.45 in December, or £143.74 without a Nectar card. Waitrose, on the other hand, was the priciest supermarket for the listed 68 items in December, totaling £170.46. Which? research indicated that Waitrose was on average 35% more expensive than Aldi in 2025. The comparison also extended to a larger weekly shop of 180 items.

Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this comparison due to their smaller product ranges. Asda emerged as the most economical for the larger list of 180 items in December, with an average bill of £450.82. Tesco Clubcard holders spent £462 on average in December for the same items, while non-Clubcard holders would have paid £493.53.

For Morrisons shoppers, the bill was £466.04 with a loyalty discount or £467.46 without. Sainsbury’s Nectar card holders paid £468.61, while non-members spent £501.89. Waitrose maintained its position as the most expensive supermarket for the larger shop, with an average bill of £529.17. The analysis by Which? factored in special offers and loyalty prices but excluded multi-buy deals.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented on Aldi’s consistent performance and affordability, emphasizing the potential savings for consumers by choosing the right supermarket. She highlighted Asda as a strong choice for those seeking a wide range of branded goods at lower prices. In a time when food costs are a concern for many households, making informed shopping decisions could result in substantial savings over a year.
