A specialist from British Gas has shared advice on addressing cold spots in radiators, suggesting a cost-effective tool priced at just 97p can help resolve the issue. Cold spots, especially at the top of a radiator, along with gurgling noises and slow heating, indicate the need to bleed the radiator, a straightforward task requiring specific equipment like a radiator key, easily obtainable for 97p at Screwfix.
Before starting the bleeding process, it is crucial to switch off the heating system, allow the radiator to cool down completely, and prepare with an old towel and container to catch water. Using the radiator key, turn the small valve anti-clockwise to release any trapped air. British Gas expert Peter Knowles emphasizes the importance of listening for a hissing sound, indicating the air is escaping, and catching the water in the container. Care should be taken not to lower the boiler pressure excessively by over-bleeding.
If persistent issues arise despite bleeding, it is advisable to seek assistance from a gas safe registered engineer. In a related tip, British Gas energy engineer Jessica Rawstron suggests maximizing oven heat by leaving the door open after cooking to warm the kitchen gradually. Energy bills have recently increased, with households paying around £1,758 annually for gas and electricity. The price cap sets limits on unit rates and standing charges, but total bills still vary based on individual energy consumption patterns.
