“Deaf Gladiators Star Jodie Ounsley Inspires with Resilience”

Must read

Jodie Ounsley, known as Fury on the popular show Gladiators, shared her thoughts on the new season hosted by Bradley Walsh and his son Barney. Drawing on her experience as a former England rugby player, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu British Champion, and five-time World Coal Carrying champion, she likened the show to a battle she’s well-equipped to face.

In 2024, Jodie was selected to join the lineup of formidable athletes for the show’s revival after an eight-year break, recognizing her strength and competitive spirit. Despite facing challenges, the 25-year-old, who was born profoundly deaf and received a cochlear implant at a young age, embraces her disability as a unique strength and takes pride in being a role model for children.

Reflecting on her impact as a Gladiator, Jodie emphasized the importance of normalizing differences and empowering others. With ambition running in her family, Jodie’s late father, Phil, a former contestant on the show, inspired her to seize opportunities and live life to the fullest.

Tragically, Phil passed away shortly before Christmas, but Jodie found solace in continuing her commitments, including rehearsing for the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special. Supported by her dance partner Neil Jones, Jodie honored her father’s memory by pushing through her grief to perform on the show.

Determined to embody her father’s adventurous spirit, Jodie is training to climb a mountain in April, finding a sense of closeness to him through these challenges. Her positive outlook and support from others are helping her navigate difficult emotions and find strength in honoring her father’s memory.

Looking ahead, Jodie contemplates the possibility of participating as a full-time contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Encouraged by her experience on the Christmas special and the support she received, she remains open to new opportunities and the potential for personal growth through future endeavors.

Fans can catch the return of Gladiators on BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday, January 17th at 5:45 pm.
