“Labour’s Failure to Address Public Service Crisis”

Must read

Having worked as a social worker for many years, I have witnessed the challenges faced by public service workers. Despite being 18 months into a new government, the situation remains dire for my colleagues.

Our pay has been continuously reduced while the cost of living continues to rise. Additionally, we have seen essential services being systematically dismantled by politicians, impacting the communities we serve.

Throughout my career in a local authority, I have observed the negative effects of budget cuts. Local authorities have been stripped of assets, with billions of pounds sold off since 2010. In my hometown of Bolton, council funding has decreased significantly, affecting the quality of services provided to residents.

Despite promises of national renewal, the Labour party has not been successful in addressing these issues. To truly serve the working class, the party must prioritize their interests over other influences like bond markets and business interests.

It is crucial for Labour to focus on improving wages and reducing costs to genuinely address the cost of living crisis. Initiatives like providing public workers with inflation-proof pay rises and supporting collective bargaining through legislation can make a significant difference.

As the UNISON general secretary, my primary goal is to advocate for the working class and enhance their well-being. Investing in public services and prioritizing the needs of ordinary people will lead to meaningful improvements in society.

Efforts to divert resources from war to vital services can bring about positive changes. By supporting workers and industries, rather than military expenditures, Labour can create a brighter future for all, putting the interests of the working class first.

The imprisonment of individuals protesting against injustices must be condemned. Taking a stand against actions like Israel’s actions in Gaza requires courage and solidarity, principles that UNISON upholds.

As a leader within UNISON, I am committed to representing the interests of the union’s members and advocating for their rights. Staying connected with the realities faced by workers is essential in fulfilling my role effectively.

It is imperative for political leaders to prioritize the well-being of the population and condemn unlawful actions that threaten global stability. Upholding international law and promoting peace should be central to governmental decisions.
