An individual has been apprehended following an incident where a police officer was reportedly cut on the face in an alleged blade attack earlier today. The suspect, a 25-year-old man, was taken into custody under suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm.
The occurrence is said to have transpired in the King Street vicinity of South Shields, South Tyneside, during the midday hours of today (Saturday). Two officers encountered a person of interest in the area, and upon approaching him, the individual purportedly attacked one of the officers with a bladed item, resulting in facial cuts.
The injured officer received medical attention at a hospital for minor injuries sustained during the assault. As investigations proceed and to provide reassurance, there is an increased police presence in the town center. Northumbria Police have assured the public that there is no broader risk to safety.
A police spokesperson stated, “Prior to 12:35 pm today (Saturday), two on-duty officers in the King Street area of South Shields spotted a person of interest. They approached the individual, who then proceeded to assault one of the officers with a bladed object, causing facial cuts.”
“The injured officer was transported to the hospital for assessment of what are believed to be minor injuries. The 25-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm and is presently in police custody.”
