“Financial Changes Ahead: Key Dates for 2026”

Must read

2026 is poised to bring significant financial changes, and the Mirror has compiled a list of important dates to keep track of. These changes range from adjustments to inheritance tax to the removal of the two-child benefit cap. Some of these changes were previously outlined in the Budget, while others have been in the works for some time.

Additionally, there are recurring updates to be aware of, such as the Ofgem price cap modifications and essential deadlines for self-employed individuals regarding their tax obligations.

For instance, the Ofgem energy price cap is set to increase from £1,755 annually to £1,758 starting in January. This adjustment is based on the typical energy usage for a direct debit-paying customer. It’s important to note that individual bills may vary depending on actual energy consumption. Ofgem reviews and revises its price cap every quarter, with subsequent changes scheduled for April, July, and October.

Furthermore, the first inflation update from the Office for National Statistics is scheduled for January 21. Inflation, which measures price fluctuations over time, is currently at 3.6% according to the Consumer Prices Index (CPI). In the past, inflation has peaked at 11.1% in the 12 months leading up to October 2022, with monthly updates being released regularly.

Those awaiting their Winter Fuel Payment can reach out to the Winter Fuel Payment Centre starting January 28. This payment, valued at up to £300, is accessible to individuals above state pension age. However, recipients earning over £35,000 annually will be required to repay it through the tax system.

Moreover, individuals with self-assessment tax obligations must file their returns online by January 31 for the 2024/25 tax year. Missing this deadline incurs a minimum fine of £100, regardless of whether taxes are owed. Any outstanding tax from the previous tax year must also be settled.

These are just a few of the financial updates and deadlines to look out for in 2026, with each event impacting various aspects of personal finances.
