Mother’s Tragic Act: Daughter’s Life Taken Before Her Own

Must read

An investigation into the death of a woman and her disabled eight-year-old daughter has revealed that the mother took the child’s life before ending her own. The bodies of Martina Karos, 40, and Eleni Edwards were discovered by emergency services at their residence in Kersal, Salford, on September 23, 2024, following concerns raised when Eleni did not show up at school.

Officials found the tragic scene in a bedroom after forcibly entering the home. The coroner’s court in Bolton conducted simultaneous inquests into both Martina and Eleni’s deaths over three days. Coroner Peter Sigee determined that Martina committed suicide and Eleni was unlawfully killed by her mother.

Martina, the sole caregiver for her daughter who faced severe physical and mental challenges from early childhood, orchestrated the tragic event. Despite receiving extensive support from family, friends, and healthcare professionals, Martina struggled with intense feelings of isolation and loneliness.

The coroner concluded that there were no lapses in the care provided to Martina and Eleni, ruling out any factors contributing to their deaths. Martina’s deteriorating mental health, marked by anxiety and depression, culminated in the tragic incident. Eleni, diagnosed with severe disabilities since infancy, required full-time care from her mother.

Martina’s mental health had shown signs of improvement before the incident, with no immediate concerns raised by professionals involved with the family. Despite being under a child protection plan due to Martina’s mental state, the professionals did not foresee the tragic outcome.
