“Poundland Announces Store Closures & Clearance Sales”

Must read

Poundland, a popular discount retailer, has recently announced additional store closures, with the imminent closure of the first three branches in a matter of days. This strategic move is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance its performance and ensure its sustainability on the British high streets.

The affected stores are currently hosting clearance sales, offering attractive discounts of up to 40% to clear out remaining inventory. Among the stores scheduled for closure are Plymstock on January 20, Gosport on January 29, and Urmston on February 16.

In response to these developments, Poundland has committed to pricing approximately 60% of grocery items at £1 in its remaining stores. This decision follows a successful five-month trial at 17 locations in the West Midlands.

The company views this pricing strategy as a return to its core values and a simplification of its pricing structure, aiming to introduce straightforward pricing across its general merchandise and clothing ranges in the coming months.

The total number of Poundland outlets is expected to decrease from 800 last year to a range of 650 to 700, as leases expire or landlords opt to terminate agreements.

Additionally, Poundland has confirmed that the stores earmarked for closure are holding extensive sales to clear their inventory. A Poundland spokesperson highlighted the opportunity for customers to benefit from substantial savings as these stores prepare for closure.

Darren MacDonald, Poundland’s UK country manager, expressed regret over the closure of these stores but emphasized the company’s commitment to providing exceptional value to customers until the final closure. He reiterated Poundland’s dedication to maintaining a strong presence across the UK through its hundreds of remaining stores.
