The Met Office has pinpointed the UK regions likely to see snowfall from late January to early February. According to their extended forecast, a surge of ‘high-pressure’ arctic air from the East is expected to clash with Atlantic weather systems during the period from Friday, January 23, to Sunday, February 1.
While the Atlantic front will dominate with heavy rain in most areas, some parts of the UK, particularly the far northeast like Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland, and the Scottish border, could experience snowfall once again. The Met Office explained that a weather battle between Atlantic systems and high-pressure colder conditions from the east will ensue during this time.
Initially, milder Atlantic air will prevail with rain showers for most regions, though the far northeast may experience colder temperatures with sleet or snow. Subsequently, the weather is anticipated to turn colder and drier, increasing the likelihood of snow in various parts of the country.
Looking ahead to early February, wintry conditions are forecasted for the northeast with potentially unsettled weather during the first half of the month. The weather patterns around the UK are expected to transition, possibly leading to cold conditions and wintry hazards at times. As February progresses, a shift towards more unsettled conditions and a return to average temperatures may occur.
