Must read

Ian Botham generated over £225,000 by auctioning off his cherished memorabilia from the 1981 Ashes series. The renowned former England cricket icon sold more than 240 items from his illustrious career at an auction held in 2023.

With England gearing up for the current Ashes series, fans are hopeful that they can draw inspiration from Botham’s historic Ashes triumph with the team over four decades ago. During the auction two years back, conducted in the Long Room at the KIA Oval, Botham parted ways with some iconic items from his Ashes victory.

One of the highlights was the red cricket ball used when Botham took five wickets for just one run to secure England’s victory at Edgbaston, which sold for £20,000. Additionally, a stump extracted by Botham after the famous Headingley win fetched £11,000, and his personal man of the match medal was acquired for £19,000.

The Headingley triumph marked a turning point for the England team more than 40 years ago, with odds at 500/1 for an improbable victory. Botham’s remarkable 149 not out set a target of 130 for the visitors to win, supported by Bob Willis who claimed eight wickets to orchestrate one of cricket’s greatest comebacks.

The stump marked ‘Headingley 81’ by Botham himself was among the items sold. Moreover, Botham auctioned the stump from the Edgbaston win, fetching £7,000.

Various other items from Botham’s career were also sold, including his player of the season medal, England test blazer, Somerset cap, a ‘baggy green’ cap from Australian captain Allan Border, an England blue day one top from the 1992 World Cup, and his BBC SPOTY Lifetime award.

The decision to sell his memorabilia was driven by Botham’s desire to downsize, as stated by auctioneer Tim Knight. The auction was managed by Knight’s Auctioneers of Norwich, Norfolk.

Knight emphasized the allure of Botham’s association with the 1981 Ashes, dubbed as Botham’s Ashes, attributing the success of the auction to the cricket legend’s esteemed reputation and the historical significance of the items sold.

He added, “Botham is regarded as one of cricket’s finest players and England’s premier all-rounder based on his outstanding statistical achievements, captivating on-field presence, entertainment value, and unwavering determination.”
