Metropolitan Mayors Stand with Minneapolis Mayor in ICE Shooting Outrage

Must read

Labour’s metropolitan mayors have voiced their support for the mayor of Minneapolis following the controversial ICE shooting that has ignited anger within the city.

Mayor Jacob Frey garnered attention for his swift reaction to the incident involving Renee Good, where he explicitly instructed ICE to vacate Minnesota.

Newly released footage, captured from the perspective of the ICE agent, reveals that Good, a mother of three, was attempting to maneuver her vehicle to drive around and away from the agent when she was shot three times and subjected to derogatory language.

This video contradicts assertions made by Donald Trump and JD Vance that Good was deliberately trying to run over the agent and that the shooting was an act of self-defense.

Labour’s metropolitan mayors have issued a joint statement in solidarity with Mayor Frey, emphasizing the crucial role mayors play in safeguarding communities with compassion and evidence-based decision-making.

The statement, signed by prominent mayors including Sadiq Khan of London and Andy Burnham of Manchester, expresses support for the protection of residents’ dignity and human rights by Mayor Frey and other US mayors.

Protesters gathered outside a Minneapolis hotel believed to be housing ICE agents, disrupting their rest with loud disturbances throughout the night.

JD Vance and Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin have asserted that the new video supports their claim of the officer acting in self-defense, a stance Mayor Frey has vehemently opposed.

Law enforcement experts maintain that while the video did not alter their perspectives on the use of force, it did raise concerns about the officer’s training, particularly his handling of a gun and a cellphone simultaneously.

The footage suggests that the officers did not perceive Good as a threat, prompting discussions among experts about the officer’s actions and decision-making during the incident.

The officer involved, a 43-year-old Iraq War veteran with extensive experience in Border Patrol and ICE, was previously injured in a similar situation involving an immigration arrest.
