Trump Vows to Secure Greenland Amid Russian and Chinese Threats

Must read

President Donald Trump has reiterated his stance that the United States must act to secure Greenland to prevent potential incursions by Russia or China. Speaking at a gathering with oil companies interested in the exploitation of Venezuelan resources, Trump emphasized his determination to acquire Greenland either through negotiation or by force. When asked about financial offers to Greenlanders, Trump deferred discussing monetary aspects at that stage.

“We will take action on Greenland, with or without their approval, as failing to do so could result in Russian or Chinese control of the region, which is unacceptable. Ideally, we seek a diplomatic resolution, but we are prepared to resort to other means if necessary,” stated Trump.

Regarding potential military involvement, UK Defense Secretary John Healey clarified during a visit to Kyiv that British facilities would not support any US military actions aimed at Greenland without a legal foundation. He emphasized the importance of observing treaty obligations within the NATO alliance, of which Greenland and Denmark are members.

The escalating concerns stem from fears of US military intervention to annex Greenland for perceived national security reasons, a move that has raised alarms within Denmark and across Europe. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen cautioned that such actions could jeopardize the NATO alliance. European leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, have advocated for Greenland and Denmark to retain autonomy in deciding their future, with diplomatic efforts underway to address potential Russian threats in the Arctic region.
