One of the United Kingdom’s oldest shoe retailers has decided to close one of its high street stores in Worcester after providing service for 153 years. Robin Elt Shoes, established in 1872, will permanently shut down on January 10, 2026. However, the company’s other branches in Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes will continue to operate.
Jenny Elt, the managing director, expressed deep sadness over the closure of the family-owned business due to financial challenges. She mentioned that sustaining the Worcester location was no longer feasible for future operations. She stated, “It’s a tough decision for us as a family business. Unfortunately, the store is no longer sustainable, and we cannot create money out of thin air.”
The Worcester City Council spokesperson highlighted the trend of online shopping impacting city centers, emphasizing the shift towards leisure and entertainment-focused town centers. Efforts have been made by the council in collaboration with other stakeholders to support city center traders. Worcester’s unique shopping blend of popular high street brands and independent retailers is being championed, with investments such as the £4.5 million public realm improvement project in the Shambles area.
In a related development, Scope, a charity shop chain, closed three additional high street branches over the weekend in Morden, Torquay, and Washington as part of its plan to shut down 77 stores this year. Scope initiated the closures following a forecasted loss of £1.5 million, leading to potential redundancies for around 200 retail staff and affecting approximately 2,000 volunteers.
Debbie Boylen, Scope’s head of retail, expressed regret over the closure of the Morden, Torquay, and Washington shops, acknowledging the vital role these stores played in supporting disabled individuals and their families. The closures were confirmed to take effect on Saturday, December 6.
These developments reflect ongoing changes in the retail landscape, with businesses adapting to evolving consumer preferences and market dynamics.
