“O2 Warns of 3G Shutdown Impact on WhatsApp Users”

Must read

O2 has issued a new warning that could impact internet and messaging applications like WhatsApp for some users. This alert precedes the shutdown of the older 3G technology in more locations across the UK by the network, now under Virgin Media.

The discontinuation of O2’s 3G signal has already occurred in various places, including Durham, Norwich, Telford, Guildford, Watford, and Torquay, with parts of Scotland next in line.

As of November 5, 2025, once O2 switches off 3G, individuals using only 3G devices will lose access to data services, affecting tasks like sending emails, reading WhatsApp messages, or browsing websites without Wi-Fi. Basic phone calls and SMS texts will still be functional.

The initial areas to witness the disappearance of 3G will be in the eastern regions of the UK, such as Aberdeen and Dundee. O2 aims to complete the 3G shutdown nationwide by the end of 2025.

Reasons for turning off 3G:

3G, introduced in 2003, is now considered outdated and inefficient for modern needs, leading to its shutdown. The technology is costly to maintain and uses up valuable bandwidth that could be better utilized for superior 4G and 5G signals, which offer significantly faster speeds compared to 3G.

Impact on users:

The impact of this change is expected to be minimal as most consumers now possess 4G and 5G-compatible devices. O2 is providing options for affected 3G customers, offering free 4G-ready devices or discounted upgrades for those without 4G-capable devices or SIM cards.

Other telecom providers like EE and Vodafone have already shut down their 3G networks to optimize network capacity.

Virgin Media O2’s Chief Technology Officer, Jeanie York, emphasized the transition to faster and more reliable 4G and 5G networks, urging users to upgrade to compatible devices before the 3G shutdown to ensure continued mobile data access.
