The Ogun and Lagos State Governments issued a joint statement concerning the recent car accident involving Anthony Joshua in Nigeria. The former heavyweight champion sustained minor injuries in a tragic collision that resulted in the loss of two lives.
Both states confirmed that Anthony Joshua, a British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, was in a road traffic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The accident occurred when the vehicle carrying a team of four collided with a stationary truck, leading to the fatalities. The governments expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for their strength during this difficult time.
Following the incident, Anthony Joshua and another passenger were promptly taken to a specialized medical facility in Lagos. Medical assessments revealed that both individuals are in stable condition and do not require immediate emergency intervention. A dedicated medical team is monitoring their progress, and Anthony Joshua is conscious and in contact with his family.
The governments of Ogun and Lagos States assured that the affected individuals will receive top-quality medical care and that investigations into the accident have commenced. They also requested privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family. The statement was endorsed by Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor of Ogun State, and Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy for Lagos State.
The car crash involved a black Lexus Jeep driven by Joshua, which collided with a stationary lorry on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria reported that the incident involved two vehicles and five adult males, resulting in two fatalities, one injury, and two individuals escaping unharmed. Preliminary findings suggest that the Lexus Jeep may have been speeding and lost control during an overtaking maneuver, crashing into the parked truck.
