Beautiful UK town with colourful houses where famous BBC children’s show was based
If you’re looking to travel around the UK this year, then it might be worth visiting one of its many unique towns. Britain is known for its quirky villages, which are full of character, unique traditions and beautiful historic buildings. Fortunately, for fans of the CBeebies series Balamory, the town in which it was filmed also offers a fantastic holiday spot for the whole family.
According to research by the holiday park operator, Away Resorts, Scotland tops the list of most desirable UK destinations for 2025. Unsurprising, given the country’s dramatic landscape, untouched forests and abundance of majestic castles. However, if you’re looking for a family-oriented trip, you may want to take a look at the town of Tobermory, tucked away on the Isle of Mull. Best known as the filming location of the popular kid’s show Balamory, the cheerful, seaside village features rows of bright, colourful houses and plentiful fun, free activities.
Kids will never be bored, given the wide range of activities they can get up to, from nature reserves to playgrounds. One of the best outdoor spots is Aros Park, which features a path around the Loch that takes just under an hour to complete. Plus there’s a climbing frame for the younger kids.
According to one TripAdvisor viewer, the park looks like a “fairy forest”. They wrote: “Absolutely breathtaking scenery. We walked here from the car park in Tobermory expecting to find the grounds of a stately home, or something similar. Instead, there was a beautiful forest path full of bluebells and rhododendrons, and wild animals, leading to a waterfall and little loch.”
If that’s not enough, there’s also the Tobermory Playpark, which was renovated in 2020 and is perfect for toddlers. It contains climbing frames, swings and a huge slide. Even better, it’s completely free, making it a great choice for budget-conscious trekkers.
Of course, it’s not all about the kids. There are plenty of great activities for adults to get up to, too. Whiskey connoisseurs will delight as the town features one of Scotland’s oldest whiskey distilleries. Founded in 1798, Tobermorey Distillery produces Isle of Mull whiskey, which is single malt and known for its gentle taste.
Foodies can also get their fix, as there are plenty of tasty eateries on offer. Macgochans in is a delightful award-winning restaurant and pub found in a former fisherman’s cottage, and has managed to retain a distinctive homely atmosphere. Last year, they were even named North Scotland Pub of the Year at the National Pub & Bar Awards.
If you’re looking for a place to stay, there is plenty of budget-friendly accommodation on offer. One of the best places to book a night in is the Western Isles Hotel, where rooms start at £70 per night and which offers great views of the harbour.
