Anthony Joshua’s driver is facing charges of reckless and dangerous driving following a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer’s close associates.
The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was behind the wheel of a black Lexus Jeep carrying Joshua, Latif Ayodele, and Sina Ghami when it collided with a parked truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Kayode, who was released from a Lagos hospital on New Year’s Eve, was later taken to Abeokuta for further proceedings.
After being questioned and providing a statement about the events leading up to the crash, Kayode was declared wanted by the police for leaving the scene. He has now been charged and granted bail by the Sagamu Magistrate Court.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Kayode faces multiple charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid license. The case has been adjourned to January 20.
In a recent update, it was revealed that the crash was caused by a tire blowout due to speeding. The truck involved in the accident, which was parked illegally, has been located and impounded by the authorities.
Following the tragic incident, tributes poured in for Ghami and Ayodele from the boxing community, with Eddie Hearn and Chris Eubank Jr. expressing their condolences. Joshua, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, paid his respects at a funeral home alongside his mother.
Despite the recent events, plans for a potential fight between Joshua and Tyson Fury in 2026 may be delayed, as the boxing world mourns the loss of two valued members of Joshua’s team.
