Clueless, The Musical review: 90s nostalgia fest with KT Tunstall sprinkling her magic

Must read

Would you be wasting your money with a ticket for Clueless the Musical – the hottest new show on London’s West End?

Ugh! As If!

The beloved movie is the latest cult classic to be given a glossy musical revamp – following in the footsteps of Cruel Intentions, Mean Girls and The Devil Wears Prada. The original Clueless, released in 1995, was inspired by the plot of Jane Austen’s Emma with its meddling heroine reimagined at a privileged Beverley Hills high school.

Taking over the lead role made famous by Alicia Liverstone, New Yorker Emma Flynn steps into Cher Horowitz satin shoes. As IT girl Cher Emma is utter perfection as the ditsy but charming, intruding – but always well meaning – teenager whose wardrobe everyone wants to steal.

As hoped, the clothes are incredible and costume changes seemingly endless. From the iconic yellow three-piece checked suit to that Calvin Klein white slip, the show is a visual feast. The sets are also a fun nostalgia-trip as the cast preen and pose with their giant mobile phones and Walkmans and dance to VHS tapes.

The musical stays true to the original movie, but the dialogue is delivered so snappily the gags still feel as if you’re hearing them for the first time: “Do you prefer “fashion victim” or “ensembly challenged”?”

Cher’s pals Dionne – ‘friends because they both know what it’s like to have people be jealous of them’ and ‘totally Clueless’ new girl Tai, played by Chyna-Rose Frederick and Romona Lewis-Malley, lead the incredible supporting cast. From cutting one-liners, toe-tapping tunes (the soundtrack was masterminded by singer song writer KT Tunstall) and the seemingly endless limits to Cher’s closest the show is a must-see for fans of the original movie and beyond.

By the final song the audience were on their feet on launch night and singing along to the curtain call, ‘She’s all that and a bag of chips’, despite assuming most of the crowd were hearing it for the very first time on the night.

The likes of Kate Lawler, Vanessa Feltz and Lizzie Cundy led the glamour as they were spotted at the Clueless: The Musical’s opening night at the Trafalgar Theatre this week.

Kate got the memo and arrived in a tweed dog-tooth co-ord, sheer black tights and black platform Mary Janes. Socialite Lizzie also got the seal of aproval wearing a matching two-piece and nude strappy heels.

They were joined by celebs including Jenni Falconer, Konnie Huq and Drag Queen A’Whora, who paid the ultimate homage to Cher by recreating her whole outfit.

Clueless The Musical continues at the Trafalgar Theatre, London until 27 September 2025
