Forget the baby shower, expectant mums are turning to a different kind of event

As the old adage goes, it takes a village to raise a child and baby showers have long been a fun way of celebrating an impending birth with family and friends.

But there has recently been a backlash against the popular events, with some parents-to-be spending fortunes on activities and decorations and expecting to receive lavish gifts in return. And according to JoJo Maman Bebe, forecasts for 2025 trends show a more low-key kind of gathering is poised to overtake the baby shower in popularity – the “nesting party”.

Searches for the new trend, which sees loved ones help an expectant parent prepare their home for the baby, have soared by a whopping 205 per cent on popular app Pinterest. Here’s everything you need to know…

“A nesting party is a small gathering of close family and friends hosted at the parents-to-be’s home,” a spokesperson for the boutique mother and baby brand explained. “Everyone joins to support the parents as they prepare for the arrival of their baby. By bringing loved ones together, the party aims to tackle the often-overwhelming list of tasks, making the process more manageable and fun.”

Washing and sterilising bottles, pump parts, dummies/pacifiers and more.

Washing, drying and folding baby clothes, blankets and bedding.

Helping with any nursery prep, whether this be building a cot, organising the nappy changing station or simply packing away the baby clothes.

Creating a list of essential items and helping to pack the hospital bag.

Meal prep freezer – making friendly meals for the parents to eat once the baby arrives.

Most importantly, offering any support and advice you can for the parents-to-be.

Be sure to have background entertainment – try a film like Bridget Jones’s Baby or What To Expect When You’re Expecting. Or create a themed playlist for background music – Baby Love by The Supremes and Haven’t Met You Yet by Michael Buble are two ideas for starters.

Team or pair up when tackling different jobs, so people can have fun while they’re working.

Enjoy a meal together after the activities are complete.

Remember to take lots of photos to show your future baby how loved they were before they were even born.

Easy zip sleepsuits – rather than newborn, trying ordering size 0-3 months to make them last.

Extra large muslins are a baby essential.

A changing mat will always be useful.

A bath towel or cuddler – the softer the better.

A soft blanket.

Buggy accessories – from phone holders to buggy fans, there are many useful gadgets out there.
