How to get free books for children of all ages on World Book Day

Must read

Dragons, fairytales and faraway places could be at your child’s fingertips with the flick of a page and with so many to choose from, why not let your little one enjoy the pleasure of finding their favourite topic from March 6 [World Book Day] – March 8.

Families are welcome at Barnardo’s Stores to come along and choose one of their choice for free with the charity store distributing 10,000 books for the special celebrated day.

Awesome Books will donate the children’s books to retail stories and all you have to do is head in with your little ones and have fun selecting, supporting literacy development among young readers.

The donation forms part of Awesome Books’ wider campaign to distribute 100,000 books to children with limited access to reading materials.

World Book Day is celebrated annually across classrooms in UK schools where pupils have fun dressing up as their favourite literary characters, discussing their favourite books and enjoying extra time to read. It celebrates the joy of reading and the transformative power of books in children’s lives.

This year, Awesome Books, a UK-based sustainable bookseller, has partnered with leading children’s charity Barnardo’s to help put books into the hands of thousands of children across the country.

“We believe every child deserves the opportunity to discover the magic of reading,” says Taskeen Ahmed from Awesome Books. “By working with Barnardo’s, we can reach children who might otherwise miss out on owning their own books.”

Building a nation of readers

Research from the National Literacy Trust shows that children who own books are more likely to enjoy reading and perform better academically. However, one in eleven children in the UK don’t have a book of their own at home.

The donated collection includes a diverse range of titles suitable for various reading ages and interests, from picture books for the youngest readers to chapter books for older children.

Sonja Green from Barnardo’s explains why this initiative matters: “Books open doors to new worlds and possibilities. For many children who visit our stores, this might be their first book to call their own. We’re thrilled to work with Awesome Books to make reading more accessible to children across the UK.”

Barnardo’s staff and volunteers at all retail locations are preparing special displays for the World Book Day weekend to create an exciting experience for children and families visiting the stores.

Awesome Books already donates thousands of books to charitable initiatives both internationally and within the UK. Their work supports literacy projects in countries like Ghana, India, and Pakistan, as well as UK-based organisations such as The Children’s Book Project.

“The simple act of giving a child their own book can spark a lifelong love of reading,” says Sonja. “We hope to see many happy faces in our stores this World Book Day weekend as children discover stories that will stay with them for years to come.”
