Huge 2000s movie John Tucker Must Die could be revived as A-list cast in talks for sequel

Almost two decades after its release, iconic noughties rom-com John Tucker Must Die could be finally be getting a sequel.

The 2006 movie, which starred Jesse Metcalfe and Sophia Bush, follows Jesse’s character – a womanizing teenager – as his ex-girlfriends (played by Sophia, Arielle Kebbel and Ashanti) set him up to fall in love with a girl and get his heart broken.

Last year, Jesse and Sophia revealed there was a script for a sequel which features the film’s original cast, and now, an update has been provided by Ashanti, who portrayed ex-girlfriend Heather in the movie. Revealing that she has been in talks with her co-star Arielle about a part two movie, Ashanti said: “Arielle, she texts me! We’ve been going back and forth a little bit. She told me that she had the idea and I was like, ‘Listen, if we can get it together, I’m down,'”.

Talking to US outlet People, she continued. “It would be hilarious to have a part two.” Despite previous claims that the sequel would contain the movie’s original cast, some cast members have confirmed they haven’t got the call up.

Penn Badgley and Brittany Snow, who appeared in the 2006 movie, confirmed that while they had heard a sequel could be in the works, they hadn’t been contacted to star in it. During an episode of Penn’s podcast, Brittany said: “I don’t know if you’ve had a call, but I’ve gotten no call.” Penn confirmed: “Yeah, I’ve had no call, no.”

Continuing, Brittany explained that she was keen to see a part two: “I have been talking to Arielle about this for years because she was trying to get it off the ground, but I didn’t know what happened. … That was the last I had heard of it, was that she was trying to make it happen, and I guess she did? I will read whatever — they’ve worked really hard.”

The movie catapulted Jesse Metcalfe to fame alongside his role in hit show Desperate Housewives, in which he played gardener John Rowland and had an affair with one of the housewives – portrayed by Eva Longoria. While the two roles saw him catapulted to global recognition and garner fame as a teen heartthrob, Jesse previously admitted the pressure which came with that title.

Speaking to i-D Magazine in 2021, the star said: “Being a sex symbol is very much about the roles that you play and my roles put me up on a pedestal. But my appearance was also criticized and picked apart by a lot of people in the media. Having your shirt off in every episode of Housewives brought a lot of pressure.”
