‘I used Beyonce’s hair line Cécred for six months – there was one stand out product’

Hair has always been something I’ve struggled with.

From screaming my head off when my mum used to wash it when I was young, and straightening it every week in secondary school – which ironically meant I was breaking my hair, to not being bothered to give it the care it needed. But that’s changed since using Beyonce’s Cécred. The Queen B’s and her mother, Tina Knowles, hairline came out just a year ago, the name to encourage women to see wash day as a sacred experience and not a chore. I even think this was a good way to suck me in if I’m honest. I treat my hair days as a titling checklist that can take hours – I have to plan out a day just to wash my hair. I’ve never seen it as an enjoyable experience.

I think we can all say that Beyonce’s hair is quite astounding, being able to kept it healthy despite the products, bleach and seat that probably goes into being the star she is. Cécred began by “prioritising the needs of textured hair [that] lacks moisture and strength,” and the hair is for all hair types. This got me a bit, I’ve always especially looked for hair products for 4C hair – there are far fewer options for this hair type yet way expensive. I’ve never gone for products that aren’t just catered for my hair – who would? I’m also not a big fan of celebrity consumerism. I’m not a big fan of changing my hair products. But, when I got a chance to try Cécred I couldn’t make the opportunity go by, for better or for worse…

My first impression of the product was that it looked extremely classy. The packaging is amazing, and it almost feels like it should be house decor. I managed to get my hands on her foundation collection which included: A clarifying shampoo and scalp scrub, hydrating shampoo, hydrating conditioner, moisturising deep conditioner, reconstructing treatment mask, moisturising sealing lotion, hair oil and the fermented rice and protein treatment. I was sure to use these.

The smell is to die for. The scents are so nice it really does make you feel like you’re having a deluxe experience while using them. After wash days – which can last a few hours – the scent of the products feels like it’s soaked into my scalp. The next few days my hair felt so good! I honestly have never had products that smell so good before.

One of my favourite products is the Keratin reconstruction mask. This intends to help the repair process of damaged hair and hair that breaks. After I take out my braids this has been my go-to – it’s very easy to neglect your hair when it’s out of sight and quite often it’s not the healthiest when I start working on it again. It used to take ages to detangle my hair but this mask lets me be sensitive to my hair.

The fermented rice and rose protein ritual has been quite a surprise to me. Most from African and Caribbean backgrounds will be familiar with this treatment. Traditionally, this process would take days to happen where you have to soak rice in water and then pour the water on your hair. I tried this once back when I was younger, but I couldn’t get past the long process. But, Cécred’s process made it way easier. The ritual is now only two steps that can be done in under 30 minutes. By using it my hair has felt stronger already and has a shine to it that I haven’t seen in a while.

Hydrate hydrate hydrate. Considering many Black women have had them that water is bad for our hair the hydrating shampoo and conditioner does the trick. The shampoo I’ve found is a gentle scrub that smells amazing if I might add. I believe it was after my third try that I started to feel the softness and hydration of my hair come alive. The conditioner has been an extra sweetener to give my hair more care. I will say that the hydrating conditioner isn’t a massive factor to buy.

Cécred’s moisturising deep conditioner I think is a better buy. Even though it is a thick product that sits well on and in your hair, creating a nice clip where my fingers can just run through the strands. It’s always the last method I use on my wash days and is worth it. It’s the icing on the top, leaving you with smoothness and shine however you want to style it.

Moisturising is always key, but when I used the moisture-sealing lotion I felt like my hair was dry the next few days. I did give it another chance and my hair did feel a tiny bit moisturised but I personally felt the need to go back to using my original moisturising lotion.

One thing I’ve had to learn the hard way was being patient – which is annoying when you want to see instant results. But, after this long use, I’ve definitely found that my hair is healthier. Healthier hair means your hair is less prone to breakage leading to actually seeing growth – which is how I’ve seen the products work on my hair.

It also feels better for me to embrace my natural hair – something that many Black women can struggle with as trying to abide by a European expectation. I’m able to experiment with my natural hair knowing it’s in good hands. Overall I would give the Foundation collection a solid eight out of 10. My favourite product is definitely the deep conditioner, something I neglected my hair for years. The price point is hard to get by, but if you do decide to buy it – you won’t regret it. See it as an investment for your hair. Let yourself invest in your hair.
