Insanely beautiful island still 32C in April where it barely ever rains
If you’re looking for sun, surf and sandy beaches but want to avoid the summer travel chaos, a trip to this South Asian oasis might be the answer. With temperatures resting around 30C even in spring, this little island has become a favourite destination among British travellers.
Situated just under the tip of India, Sri Lanka is no longer a well-kept secret. Word is out about the country’s bounty of beaches—long beloved by surfers—mountainous terrain and welcoming inhabitants. April is a great time to book your travel, as the island usually only sees occasional showers across the month. The country’s two distinct monsoon seasons also fall outside of April.
First and foremost, Sri Lanka is defined by its impressive natural beauty. The island’s unique topography of coastal regions and central mountain ranges ensures there is something for every type of adventure seeker.
Those who love the water will likely gravitate towards Sri Lanka’s 800 miles of coastline, but the best beach depends on what you’re looking for. Travellers seeking tranquility on a golden stretch of sand should head to Bentota. This beach is beloved amongst travellers for its serene atmosphere and proximity to the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project.
The Trincomalee Coast (known as Trinco to locals) is ideal for snorkellers and divers given its access to coral reefs. The beach’s miles of fine sand also offer breathtaking views, and the historic city of Trincomalee is worth a visit, as is the nearby Pigeon Island National Park.
And for big-time surfers? Arugam Bay is the go-to destination. This crescent beach is adored by the international surfing community and is dotted with surf schools for those eager to master the waves. The southern part of the beach is also known for its busy fishing hub, making it a great place to engage with the local community.
If hiking is more your forte, Little Adam’s Peak Hike in Ella is a great way to appreciate the island’s mountainous landscape. The highest point of the trail reaches 1,141 metres above sea level and is suitable for beginners, with paths and stairs to ease the journey.
In addition to hiking, one of the best ways to discover the island is by train. The Colombo to Badulla railway is a bucket list journey for international travellers, known as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. You may even have seen pictures of travellers hanging off the open train doors, though this is certainly not advised. The rail journey lasts between 9-10 hours and provides one-of-a-kind views of the island’s lush forests, tea plantations, waterfalls and farming fields. The train journey between Colombo and Ella is another popular route.
No matter what type of adventure you seek, Sri Lanka has a bounty to offer and is more than happy to share in it with travellers.
