Kate Mulgrew to Star in Gritty Crime Series “Dope Thief”

Must read

Kate Mulgrew, known for her portrayal of Captain Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek, is set to tackle a gritty new role in Apple TV+’s crime series Dope Thief, a departure from her previous sci-fi adventures aboard the USS Voyager.

In the upcoming miniseries, Mulgrew will play Theresa, the stepmother of Ray (portrayed by Brian Tyree Henry), who, along with his friend Manny (played by Wagner Moura), finds himself entangled in a violent gang conflict following a failed attempt to impersonate DEA agents and rob drug dealers.

During a recent interview with Express Online and other media outlets, Mulgrew shared details about her character: “Theresa is a working-class woman from lower South Philly, which is why showrunner Peter Craig encouraged me to master the accent. It was a challenging but rewarding experience.”

The series, adapted from Dennis Tafoya’s novel, is scheduled to premiere this Friday, promising viewers an immersive journey into the world of brutal gang warfare in the weeks to come.

Mulgrew’s dedication to her role is evident, especially in her authentic regional accent, which she admitted was difficult to perfect. She emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency in her speech pattern to stay true to the character.

The acclaimed actress also expressed her excitement about working alongside Ving Rhames, known for his roles in Mission: Impossible and Pulp Fiction, who portrays Ray’s father, Bart, in the show.

Teasing a poignant storyline, Mulgrew hinted at a touching narrative development involving Theresa’s deep connection with Ray, the son left behind by Bart. This emotional bond adds layers to the character dynamics, showcasing the complexities within the series.

Reflecting on her collaboration with Rhames, Mulgrew praised his intensity as an actor, highlighting the unique challenges and rewards of working with him on set.

Audiences are encouraged not to miss the star-studded cast, which includes Marin Ireland from The Umbrella Academy and Amir Arison from The Blacklist, as the first two episodes of Dope Thief premiere this week on Apple TV+.

“Dope Thief” premieres with two episodes on Friday, 14th March on Apple TV+.
