London Mayor Khan: Homicides at Record Low

Must read

London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed his dissatisfaction with the negative portrayal of London despite recent statistics indicating a significant decrease in homicides.

Newly released data demonstrates a remarkable decline in the total number of killings, reaching a 14-year low and the lowest level per capita since records commenced. Khan emphasized, “Despite efforts to criticize London, the data presents a contrasting narrative.”

In the past year, London witnessed its lowest murder rate per capita on record, the fewest murders among individuals under 25 this century, and one of the lowest homicide rates in nearly thirty years.

Khan highlighted the Metropolitan Police’s use of advanced technologies such as facial recognition and targeted operations against gangs, resulting in an additional 1,000 monthly arrests. The most recent figures show a year-on-year 11% reduction in homicides in 2025, marking the lowest total since 2014, despite a population increase of over 500,000 in London since then.

The current homicide rate in the capital stands at 1.1 per 100,000 individuals, notably lower than rates in other major cities like New York, Berlin, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Toronto. Khan affirmed, “The outcomes are evident: fewer lives lost, fewer devastated families. While each murder is tragic, we remain committed to employing all available resources to combat serious violence.”

Metropolitan Police detectives achieved an impressive 95% solve rate last year, underscoring their effectiveness in resolving cases.

Director of London’s violence reduction unit, Lib Peck, acknowledged the misconceptions about London’s safety, emphasizing that homicide levels are at historic lows and overall violence continues to decline. Peck stressed the importance of addressing online narratives to enhance the public’s sense of safety.

In a recent development, Reform mayoral candidate Laila Cunningham faced criticism for her negative remarks about London’s safety. Cunningham’s comments at a press conference highlighted concerns about the city’s perceived decline in safety over the years.

The violence reduction unit conducted over 550,000 targeted interventions to prevent youth involvement in gangs and violence last year, reflecting proactive measures to curb crime.

Khan concluded by affirming the success of the city’s comprehensive approach to combat crime, addressing both law enforcement measures and the underlying causes of criminal activities.
