London’s iconic red double-decker bus gets a luxurious makeover with first-class perks
London’s iconic red double-decker bus has been transformed into a ‘first-class’ experience, complete with a red carpet entrance and plush red velvet cushioned seats.
For a select group of passengers travelling from Charing Cross to The London Eye, the journey included free-flowing champagne, delectable canapes such as beef Yorkshire puddings, tomato shells filled with goat’s cheese, vegan cauliflower pakoras, and indulgent pastel de natas.
As the bus passed by Big Ben, the London Eye, and along the scenic Southbank, travellers were saved from the usual commuting woes no delays, unpleasant smells, or rush hour crowds were in sight.
A delighted 79 year old Jan Marshall from Tunbridge Wells exclaimed about the experience: “What a marvellous way to start the day; 10 out of 10,” adding, “It was a wonderful and unexpected experience – the best sort you can have.”
According to a survey comprising 2000 adults, familiar public transport nuisances include loud phone calls, sneezing fellow passengers, fare hikes, standing during entire journeys, music blaring from phones, and grubby seating.
But for those on this bespoke double-decker, the commute was nothing short of extraordinary.
Emma Isaac, from Virgin Money, who were responsible for the upgrade, said: “We all know how brilliant it can be to get an unexpected treat on an otherwise very ordinary day.
“We thought the classic double decker was due a refresh and an elevated, extraordinary experience seemed like the best way to go to help brighten up people’s days and boost their moods.”
Half of all respondents wish buses had first-class areas – and 45% have never travelled in any form of first-class transport.
According to the research people would like to see more luxurious seating, pleasant interiors and a welcome drink included in a first-class area of a bus.
The perfect commute would include no traffic, free onboard Wi-Fi, and better air conditioning or heating. Beautiful views and free high-end food and drinks were also among the top desires something the Virgin Money bus offered to all riders.
Emma Isaac from Virgin Money, added: “The research has shown there are many gripes that Brits typically have with an ordinary commute.”
She adds: “We’ve all experienced sitting next to someone who’s eating something that’s a little pungent or being on packed transport at rush hour.
“Hopefully, those that took the bus thought their journey was anything but ordinary for all the right reasons.”
