Los Angeles earthquake: 4.4 magnitude tremor hits near Malibu as residents report shaking

Residents reported shaking following an earthquake near Los Angeles.

The California quake was recorded at a depth of 7.2 miles today, with its epicentre around 6.8 miles southwest of Westlake Village. Areas including Canoga Park, Simi Valley, Montbello and La Verne all reported shaking.

Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci said on X: “A magnitude 4.1 #earthquake just rattled Los Angeles. The epicenter was just south of Thousand Oaks near Malibu Beach. Minor shaking was felt in downtown #LosAngeles. This was a shallow quake (10 mile deep hypocenter) with a mostly side to side fault slip.”

One X user wrote that it was the “scariest earthquake” they had experienced and that it felt like a bomb was going off. Journalist for the Daily Racing Form Steve Andersen said runners at the Santa Anita Park racecourse felt a “brief rumbling” he said: “Nothing like being on the fifth-floor, the top floor, by the way, when such events occur.”

One person also wrote: “Ooh, felt that one – not big, but the kind that makes you stop in your tracks while you wait to see if it’s going to get worse. Rolling quake. Bit of a bigger shake at the beginning. Feels like there’ll be aftershocks, as well.”

There have so far been no reports of damage or injuries. Shortly after the initial tremor, small magnitude eathquakes of 2.5, 3.0 and 2.8 were recorded in the Malibu area.

Small quakes in California are common and the USGS said that the southern part of the state has around 10,000 every year. “Most of them are so small that they are not felt,” the body said. “Only several hundred are greater than magnitude 3.0, and only about 15-20 are greater than magnitude 4.0.”

This quake comes a week after the Los Angeles Oscars afterparties were left shaking. Camera crews reporting live from A-list parties hosted by Vanity Fair, Elton John and others were seen holding onto their equipment as projected signs and backdrops trembled. The earthquake, measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale, struck about 10 miles northwest of L.A. at approximately 10.13pm local time on March 2.
