“Mother Shocked as Infant Suffers Fractured Skull at Nursery”

Must read

A mother placed her trust in the nursery where she worked to care for her seven-month-old infant, only to be shocked when she found out the baby had suffered a fractured skull.

Kiera Young, 26, had been employed at Primrose City Nursery in Glasgow for almost two years when she decided to enroll her daughter, Lexie Hurles, there. Unfortunately, during Lexie’s third visit to the nursery, she sustained a skull fracture and brain injury during a two-hour settling-in session.

The incident came to light when Kiera arrived to collect her daughter on March 24, 2023, and even after two years, many details surrounding the incident remain unclear. Following three complaints raised by Lexie’s family, the Care Inspectorate ruled in their favor, leading to a legal settlement in the five-figure range with the nursery.

Expressing her dismay, Kiera shared with the Daily Record: “I trusted the nursery where I worked, believing in the staff due to my long tenure there. It’s disheartening when your own colleagues and supervisors fail you in such a manner.”

After receiving medical attention at the Royal Hospital for Children in Govan, Lexie was diagnosed with a skull fracture and mild brain injury. Although she was discharged after two days, she had to be readmitted due to subsequent symptoms. Even after three months, Lexie displayed signs of distress and sought comfort.

Kiera, who no longer works at the nursery, received conflicting reports about the incident, with one account suggesting supervision at the time of the fall and another indicating a staff member’s absence. Prompted by the lack of care and communication, Kiera reported the incident to the Care Inspectorate, resulting in the validation of all three complaints.

Following the nursery’s initial denial of liability, Kiera pursued a legal claim through Digby Brown Solicitors, leading to an out-of-court settlement facilitated by the nursery’s insurance company.

A representative from Digby Brown Solicitors remarked on the severity of Lexie’s injuries and emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols in childcare facilities to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The Mirror has reached out to Primrose City Nursery for their response to the incident.
