The economy has failed to support working individuals adequately for an extended period.
In the past, the government prioritized disorder and uncertainty over improving living standards. They opted against investing in transportation infrastructure such as trains, buses, and roads, as well as neglecting clean energy and future job opportunities. This lack of investment in essential sectors like education, healthcare, and local communities has hindered economic growth.
Residents in the North have experienced the adverse effects of insufficient investment firsthand, especially given my experience as a Leeds Member of Parliament for 16 years.
I recently unveiled a significant investment plan in Northern rail services, the most substantial in a generation, in collaboration with local leaders to ensure effective implementation.
The introduction of Northern Powerhouse Rail will revolutionize travel by enhancing connectivity between key cities like Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York through improved and more frequent transportation services. Additionally, these services will extend to Newcastle, Hull, and other locations.
Currently, residents face challenges such as limited fast train services and lengthy travel times within the North, like the sparse fast train options from Liverpool to Manchester or the lack of efficient mass transit in Leeds, impacting daily commutes and overall economic progress. The investment aims to address these issues, providing better connections and reducing travel times, ultimately benefiting families and businesses in the region.
Prior initiatives such as freezing rail fares after three decades and maintaining the £3 bus fare cap have already shown positive impacts, allowing individuals to save more money for other expenses. By properly connecting major Northern cities, we can unleash their economic potential, fostering growth in various sectors like technology, finance, manufacturing, and energy.
Increasing productivity in the North to match the national average could potentially add £40 billion annually to the economy, leading to enhanced funding for public services, healthcare, and educational institutions.
While previous administrations failed to deliver on promises of regional development, resulting in infrastructure setbacks and economic struggles, the current government is committed to fulfilling its pledges and driving growth in the North through strategic investments and tangible actions.
By recognizing the historical significance of Northern cities and their contributions to global development, we are now focused on empowering these cities through transformative rail projects, ensuring a brighter future for residents and businesses. This commitment aims to restore trust, boost economic prosperity, and create a more connected and prosperous North.
