Paul Lim, at 71 years old, has achieved another milestone by defeating Jeffrey de Graaf at Ally Pally. This victory solidifies Lim’s position as the oldest player to secure a win at the PDC World Championship. Lim, 35 years senior to De Graaf, triumphed 3-1 in a surprising upset, securing his place in the second round, marking 44 years since his debut at the World Championship.
Having qualified for Ally Pally after his last appearance in the 2022 World Championship, where he was defeated by Joe Murnam in the first round, Lim showcased a performance averaging 86.52 with two 180s. Despite a below-par showing from De Graaf, Lim’s performance was sufficient for the win.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Lim credited the supportive crowd for his success, stating, “Just to make it here is an achievement.” Reflecting on the nature of the game, Lim emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise.
In his previous notable victory, Lim defeated the current World No.2, Luke Humphries, in the previous year’s championship. If Humphries secures a win against Ted Evetts, a potential rematch between Lim and Humphries awaits in the second round.
Acknowledging Humphries’ dedication and skill, Lim praised him as a formidable opponent while expressing hope for a repeat victory. Known as the Singapore Slinger, Lim’s remarkable career includes being the first player to achieve a nine-dart finish in the 1990 BDO tournament, earning a £52,000 bonus.
Lim’s enduring presence in darts has solidified his status as one of the sport’s iconic figures, with his achievements and nickname adding to his legacy.
