Pretty UK seaside town has one of the best fish and chip shops in the country

A thriving seaside town on Devon’s English Riviera continuously reaps the benefits of huge tourist numbers every year.

But there’s another lesser-known accolade to its name. Torquay is also home to one of the best rated fish and chip shops in the country. In 2024’s Fry Awards, Pier Point Fish & Chips, overlooking the seafront, was among 50 of the best in the entire nation. The traditional British dish which is often bought by families on Fridays, continues to be a big drive for seaside visits. Many coastal towns see their fish and chip outlets swarming with hungry guests when the temperatures ramp up.

Reviews for the restaurant are glowing, with TripAdvisor users saying: “We had a fantastic lunch at pier point. Haddock and chips and the fish cakes special were exceptional with a side of the curry sauce. Christina was absolutely fantastic very chatty and friendly.”

Another added: “We arrived and the staff were lovely and let us sit by window for an amazing view of Torquay seafront. We wanted to try the fish and chips and see how it compares to other restaurants in the area for fish and chips. The batter is super light and crispy, the fish flaky and delicious. Homemade mushy peas and tartare sauce were an added bonus, only issue was that the chips were disappointing, but waitress said that they were changing the chips supplier so that won’t be an issue in future.”

Torquay is no stranger to huge visitor numbers, with Torbay Council claiming 1.45 million tourists decide to stop over, with 3.8 million day-trippers per annum. The town’s tourism economy benefits a whopping £442 million, a report from the council said.

It is renowned for its iconic palm trees, bustling harbour, family friendly beach and an array of shops and restaurants to seek out. The town has strong links to historic crime author, Agatha Christie, who was born in Torquay in 1890 and would regularly rollerblade up and down the town’s pier during her younger years.

Visit Devon says: “Nestled in the glorious UNESCO English Riviera Global Geopark, Torquay is a haven for families looking for a fun-filled experience, couples looking for romance and singles looking to explore and find adventure. With its pretty seafront, stylish marina and meandering beaches there is plenty to explore for all who visit Torquay.”

One key element which makes visitors feel like they could be anywhere in Europe is the palm tree-lined promenade, offering picturesque sea and yachts in the marina. Along with the views out to sea, the skyline of Torquay is also dominated by a gigantic London Eye-styled wheel. Apart from this one is called The English Riviera Big Wheel, and sits in Princess Gardens. The ride itself is about 15 minutes – and it is only open on a seasonal basis, shutting temporarily after the summer months.
