Queen Camilla Visits Women’s Center in Northern Ireland

Must read

Queen Camilla, aged 77, visited the Atlas Women’s Centre in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, a hub for adult learning and support. During her visit, she met a domestic violence survivor and expressed regret for not having time to pursue her watercolor painting hobby. The center offers various activities like sewing, stitching, painting, and music, and the Queen admired watercolor paintings created by the members.

Camilla, dressed in a green coat dress, praised the women at Atlas for their contribution, especially the making of hundreds of scrubs for healthcare workers during the Covid crisis. She interacted with participants in the Domestic Abuse & Violence Programme and enjoyed a performance by the center’s sign language ukulele band, the ‘Sing, Sign, Strum’ group.

In a heartwarming moment, the Queen engaged with Liz Docherty, who shared her story of escaping an abusive relationship in Scotland and finding solace at Atlas. Camilla acknowledged the importance of sharing experiences with others to promote healing and growth.

After unveiling a plaque, Camilla described Atlas as a “very happy place” and expressed a desire for similar centers to be replicated. Despite the visit being kept secretive, locals gathered to catch a glimpse of the Queen, who graciously interacted with well-wishers, including a guide dog in training.

Participants, like Liz, appreciated the Queen’s visit, highlighting the center as a supportive and empowering environment. The day started with Camilla and King Charles meeting creatives in Belfast before visiting the Sea Holly Gallery.
