Must read

Renowned artist Peter Sedgley, co-founder of Space Studios alongside painter Bridget Riley in the 1960s, passed away at the age of 94, as confirmed by the studio. Sedgley, distinguished for his kinetic and optical artistry, established the workspace in 1968, making it the longest continuously operating art studio in London.

In a statement released on March 17, Space expressed, “Peter Sedgley was an artist with a unique social consciousness, envisioning the artist’s studio as a hub for limitless imagination and a catalyst for societal, political, and economic transformation. His approach reflected a blend of adventurous spirit, risk-taking, and profound contemplation.”

Noteworthy is Sedgley’s dedication to his intricate luminous paintings, which gradually evolved into sculptural forms, showcasing his independent pursuit of innovation. He also initiated an Art Information Registry utilized by notable figures like David Bowie and Frank Auerbach to locate exhibition venues, promote their work, and secure commissions.

Transitioning from a military background and a brief stint as an architect, Sedgley held his inaugural solo exhibition in 1965 at the McRoberts And Tunnard Gallery in London, marking a sell-out success with several pieces finding homes in esteemed galleries such as Tate Britain.

Among his notable creations are works like Glide, Colour Cycle, Suspense, and Blue Pulse. The London-native artist remained active well into his nineties, culminating in a retrospective exhibition honoring his late wife Inge, with whom he shared two children, at the Redfern Gallery in London last November.

Space Studios emphasized, “Peter’s pioneering vision has solidified Space as London’s oldest continually operating artist studio provider.” The passing of the visionary artist and Space Studios co-founder at the age of 94 sparked tributes and accolades from fans and supporters.

Commenting on Sedgley’s legacy, a social media post hailed him as a trailblazer in kinetic and optical art, transforming the art landscape with his dynamic and captivating creations. Another tribute lauded his profound impact on the art community, recognizing his unwavering support for fellow creatives through Space Studios.

Many lauded Sedgley for his lifelong commitment to innovation and his enduring influence on successive generations of artists. His avant-garde artistic vision and his generosity in fostering opportunities for others were acknowledged, solidifying his status as a revered figure in the art world.
