Talbot Green shooting: Major update after ‘mistaken identity’ killing of mum on doorstep
Four more people have been arrested after a mum was shot dead on her doorstep in a possible case of mistaken identity.
Joanne Penney, 40, was staying at a flat in Talbot Green, South Wales, when a gunman opened fire at her on Sunday evening. She suffered serious injuries and tragically died at the scene.
South Wales Police arrested a man, aged 42, the same night as the shooting and now four more police have been detained with the force saying that a crime scene remains in place.
“We are continuing to investigate the murder of Joanne Penney following a shooting in Talbot Green on Sunday evening. Police were called to an address at Llys Illtyd at 6.10pm on Sunday, March 9, where Joanne was found seriously injured having been shot to the chest,” said a statement from South Wales Police.
“Despite the best efforts of emergency services, she died at the scene. Our thoughts are with Joanne’s family and friends at this time, and we will do everything we can to support them. A 42-year-old local man who was arrested on Sunday night, March 9, remains in police custody.
“Last night (Monday, March 10), four more people were arrested in the Leicestershire Police force area in connection to the incident – a 21-year-old woman from Oadby, Leicestershire; a 27-year-old man from Oadby, Leicestershire; a 68-year-old man from Braunstone Town, Leicestershire, and a 39-year-old woman from Leicester.
“They are currently in custody and will be questioned. The 42-year-old man from Talbot Green who was arrested remains in police custody. Crime scenes remain in place as work continues to gather evidence following the shooting and inquiries into the circumstances continue.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Ceri Hughes said: “While these arrests are a significant development, the investigation into Joanne’s death is continuing and we have a team of experienced detectives and specialist staff working hard to establish the circumstances of this terrible incident.”
The force’s statement continued: “From our investigations carried out so far, we know that two vehicles – a distinctive beige Nissan Note (BK61 ZDC) and a black Volvo XC40 (FD24 PZF) travelled from the Leicester area sometime after 10.30am on Sunday, March 9, into South Wales before leaving shortly after the incident took place.”
Det Ch Supt Hughes added about the cars: “We need information about the movement of these vehicles and their occupants, including any dashcam footage, particularly from commercial vehicles, for any journeys on Sunday. Both vehicles were seized following last night’s arrests and will be subject to forensic examination.
“While we have teams of officers carrying out house-to-house and CCTV enquiries, I also appeal for any dashcam footage or CCTV around Llys Illtyd and the nearby retail park between 5.30pm and 6.30pm on Sunday, March 9, which may have captured these vehicles and any witnesses.
“The investigation has continued at pace, and we are working hard to establish a motive for Joanne’s killing. We are exploring several lines of enquiry, including the possibility that she was the victim of mistaken identity. I would urge anyone who has information, either about Joanne’s death or what happened at the property in Llys Illtyd on Sunday evening, to do the right thing and come forward – the smallest piece of information could be of vital importance.”
