A police detention of a teenage girl has occurred due to suspicions of poisoning food meant for her parents and cousin after being forbidden from seeing her boyfriend, reports say. The 17-year-old girl admitted to adding a toxic substance known as chumbinho to three meals her mother prepared in Nova Serrana, Minas Gerais, Brazil, on January 7. The poison, typically used to kill rodents, was ingested by her mum, 35, dad, 41, and cousin, 36, according to the Military Police.
The incident unfolded following a disagreement between the girl and her parents. Major Renato Geraldo da Silva of the Military Police stated that the girl altered the meals out of anger towards her family’s disapproval of her romantic relationship. The poison container was already present in the household, and small black granules believed to be the poison were discovered in the meals.
The cousin, upon noticing an unusual texture in one of the meals, halted consumption and informed his family. The parents were alerted and refrained from eating, while the cousin sought medical attention and received treatment, remaining in stable condition under observation.
The teenager expressed to authorities that her actions were fueled by anger over her parents’ disapproval of her relationship. Forensic teams retrieved the meals for further analysis, including intact samples, to confirm the poison’s composition. The Civil Police confirmed the girl’s detention, stating that the investigation is ongoing.
The unnamed girl was taken to the Civil Police station with her legal representative and remains under the justice system’s jurisdiction. In a separate case from Australia, a woman was convicted of triple murder by serving her family poisonous beef Wellington containing death cap mushrooms, resulting in three deaths and one survivor who required a liver transplant. The offender received a lengthy prison sentence, ensuring she remains incarcerated for an extended period.
