Authorities from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minnesota have adopted a new phrase in the aftermath of the tragic killing of Renee Good in the city.
Recent videos have surfaced showing ICE officers intimidating peaceful demonstrators, instructing them to stop following or adhere to their commands. Several officers have been recorded using variations of the phrase “have you not learned?” in connection to the fatal shooting of the mother of three by an ICE agent in Minneapolis last week.
The increase in deployment of anti-Migrant personnel by the Trump administration into Minnesota has led to escalating tensions. Renee Good was fatally shot by an ICE officer while she was attempting to maneuver her vehicle past him to leave. Despite video evidence proving she posed no threat, Trump officials labeled her as a “domestic terrorist” and defended the officer’s actions as self-defense.
Following the shooting incident, at least five prosecutors have resigned in protest against the Justice Department’s handling of the case. Among them is First Assistant US Attorney Joe Thompson, who had been overseeing the prosecution of various public fraud cases in the state. In response to the surge of over 2,000 immigration officers into Minnesota by the Department of Homeland Security, the state, along with Minneapolis and St. Paul, filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration to halt or restrict the influx.
The lawsuit alleges that Homeland Security’s actions are violating constitutional rights, especially targeting a progressive state that leans towards Democrats and embraces immigrants. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed concern over the substantial presence of federal agents in the city and its impact on daily life. A court hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday to address the issue.
Homeland Security officials have defended their operations, citing over 2,000 arrests made since early December in the state. Despite facing legal challenges, they remain resolute in their actions. In response to the lawsuit, spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin accused Minnesota officials of neglecting public safety. Additionally, ICE agents deployed tear gas and non-lethal irritants against activists during recent clashes, while students staged a walkout at a suburban school to protest the immigration raids.
