In the midst of escalating threats to acquire Greenland, President Donald Trump launched a pointed verbal assault on NATO allies in just five words.
During a press briefing aboard Air Force One, Trump reiterated his intentions to take over the Danish territory, regardless of the consequences for the defense alliance. Responding to concerns about the impact of seizing Greenland on US-NATO relations, Trump bluntly stated, “If it affects NATO, then it affects NATO,” and further criticized the organization in nine words by stating, “They need us much more than we need them.”
Despite significant opposition from the majority of Greenland’s population, with only six percent in favor of joining the US according to a recent poll, the Trump administration remains resolute in its plans to acquire Greenland either through purchase or invasion. Trump justified this stance by asserting that Greenland should strike a deal to prevent potential takeovers by Russia or China, while inaccurately downplaying Denmark’s defense capabilities.
Emphasizing his belief in the inevitability of US control over Greenland, Trump declared, “If we don’t take Greenland, Russia or China will. And I’m not going to let that happen…One way or the other, we’re going to have Greenland.”
Questioning the value of NATO and the willingness of member states to assist the US in times of crisis, Trump expressed doubts about the alliance’s reliability, stating, “I like NATO. I just wonder whether or not if needed NATO would they be there for us? I’m not sure they would.”
Trump’s comments have stirred concern both in Europe and the US, with fears mounting that the administration may turn against longstanding allies. As discussions about Greenland’s future continue, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to engage in talks with Danish officials, while European leaders stress that the fate of the territory should ultimately be determined by its residents and the Danish government.
